Meet Micheale

Hello and welcome!

I'm Micheale Collie at Highlands Counseling. My first name is pronounced the same as Michelle, thanks Mom!  I'm a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC #15467), a Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS-26102), and a Certified Clinical Supervisor-Intern (CCS-21825).

In my free time I love just about everything related to music and can be found playing guitar and piano, going to concerts, and geeking out over my favorite artists. I also enjoy being outside, walking trails, searching for the best cup of coffee in Durham, and spending time with friends and family.

My Therapeutic Approach

I believe the strength of the therapeutic relationship is the cornerstone of all the work we will do together.   You are the expert of your own life, and I am dedicated to partnering with you in your journey of recovery from a strengths-based approach. I offer a supportive, non-judgmental counseling environment and pull from my training in Music Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, creative/expressive arts interventions, and mindfulness.

My clinical focus areas are substance use disorders, chronic pain or illness, trauma, life transitions, relationships, grief, anxiety, and depression. I am passionate about working with underserved communities and I am LGBTQIA+ affirming. I invite all people to join me on the path to wellness.

My Background and Experience

I earned a Bachelor of Music Therapy degree from Radford University and a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from North Carolina Central University. I've worked in a variety of settings over the years. Most of my career has been spent in community mental health where I worked with adults with few economic resources but great grit and determination to change their lives.
